Jason Leads;

  • 60 min - Troop philosophy and lessons learned leading Nav/Adv patrols.
    • Thank you and get ready - you have a lot to learn!
    • Nav & Adv. Leaders handbook.
    • What's the difference leading WT vs. Navigators vs. Adventurers.  Similarities?  Frontiers for ex.
      • The days of simple Woodlands Trail advancement are no more
      • Navigators is where they start discovering and answering how to's for themselves
      • To give them space for experimental learning, adults more and more step back and allow failure to happen for the Trailman's benefit
        • It's not total freedom from adult oversight :-)
        • Failure can sometimes be the best way to connect.  First time backpacking stories.
      • Adventurers hopefully can be treated more like adults
    • Navs and Advs, separate but related programs.  Why?
      • Big maturity differences.  Different life interests
      • 13 yr. old Eagle Scouts
      • Navigators will develop outdoor skills.  Adventurers use those skills to execute on more High Adventure, Service, and Leadership
    • Patrols and how we haven't had them ideally for awhile.   Establish your Patrol's standards from day 1.  Establish an identity.  Get that Junior Patrol Leader
      • Trail Guides: Make a big deal out of the JPL and let them know they are expected to provide info back to the patrol.   Servant leaders
        •  Give everyone a term as JPL.  Try not to allow two terms in a row unless no one steps up.
      • Voting ideas for patrol leader, avoiding tenting cliques, gear issues (people will have better and worse stuff - learning how to handle that is important), grubmaster how often.
    • Mentoring, guiding
      • You're enforcing Safety
      • Be approachable for when things go sideways
      • Always step in when safety is on the line
      • Know your Bible and theology - You will likely mentor adults and be mentored too
      • Be humble
      • Apologize right away
      • Remember that everyone is volunteering
    • Campouts, grubmasters, campfires
      • $12 rule, learn how to plan a meal, how to reign in ideas for whole pig underground roasts (maybe not!) or sloppy joe's every campout.
      • Communicate with parents in the patrol.  Planning meals leads to a lot of how to communication.   Help parents know they should let their son try managing everything before helping.
    • Working with the 1st Officer - what's that right balance of boy led vs. stepping in to help lead during campouts?  Depends on the 1st Officer.
      • It's OK to leave stuff, while also not dropping everything
    • Patrol Leaders Council.  The inside scoop on what actually happens...
    • End of Rank Advancement Conferences and Boards of Review
      • Horizon we handle differently.
      • Freedom BORs are conducted with adult leaders outside Troop
  • 45 min - Advancement overview for Navs and Advs. - Similar, but the new 2019 requirements are different, so the wiki will need a reasonable overhaul.
    • Periodic Table of Advancement
      • Goal: Cover each badge twice over 18 months in program
    • Ranks have four components:
      • Trail Badges
      • Service, Leadership
      • Troop Involvement
      • Faith Based
      • Joining Leader Conference - How To Doc.  Know the safety info.  Be sure you have completed your youth protection.
    • 2013 vs. 2019 Requirements and how we're going to handle the changes this year?
    • Why the wiki?
      • How is it structured?
      • What about 2019 requirements?
    • Sign offs
      • Use the wiki.
      • Follow the letter of the requirement.
    • Trailmen manage their handbook.
      • Trailmen should always have their handbook.
      • What if a Trailman loses his handbook?  Recommend parents take pictures/copies.
    • How do we expect to use the upcoming new Field Guides?  First Aid, Camping, Outdoor Skills
    • Service Stars - Service hours.
      • What qualifies? A sign off letter from recipient is ideal.
      • How to best track?
      • How many stars are required per program?
        • What if you are a year + 1 day
      • Straight hours are sort of difficult to handle!
    • Electives and Design Your Own Badge
    • Freedom Award Questions?  Major and Minors?
  • 10 min - Worthy Life Award Changes for 2019 Based Advancement
  • 5 min - Shooting Sports.
  • 10 min - Online Resources review - .com, .net, dropbox, TroopTrack, Trail Life Connect, jointhetrail.com (wiki handled earlier)
  • 60 min - Get signed in and learn how to use Trail Life Connect.  This will be replacing Troop Track.
    • Documents!  A good resource, but pain in the tail to find anything.   Electives
    • The status of Trail Life's migration and how to migrate partials from TroopTrack.
  • 15 min - How to Work with the Advancement Chair Towards Court of Honor?
  • Remaining - Q & A
