For Woodlands Trail Trail Guides and open to interested all interested parents

Agenda

  • 10 min - Welcome and program leadership structure for the year
    • Who and How to work in the Troop - Sample Troop Org Chart.  Point men as well.
    • Jason, Gregg, and Luke's other activities
  • 30 min - Troop philosophy and lessons learned leading the Woodlands Trail program
    • What's the difference leading WT vs. Navs and Adventurers
    • Why do we do what we do?  To create new connections that help provide an opportunity to disciple our young men, mentor, model christian manhood, expose and demonstrate God's word, try to increase His kingdom, and ultimately glorify Him.
      • This is an opportunity to learn and teach.  You will not only influence young men, you will influence adults and families as well.
      • Troop 317 is not about Advancement or earning the Freedom Award (we love it when boys earn stuff though!)
    • Lessons Learned
      • When leading, find your zone and then build from there.
        • Will never be 100% perfect fun for everyone all the time.  Total chaos leads to un-engagement.  In teaching, there's a fine line between boredom and active, fun engagement.  Learn to keep an eye out for both in the boys.   Your looking for the sweet spot of engagement + mentoring
      • Game time + Branch Time
      • Be consistent, consistent, consistent in the big stuff - the bumpers that frame the your time with the boys - and how you operate at the high level
        • Ex. Hands off! Teasing.
        • Your leadership and rules that you have established with the patrol
        • Have contracts with the Trailmen
        • Be patient
      • Keep it simple then repeat.
        • Clearly introduce change.  Ex. when it's time to switch gears that night, or when switching branches, etc.
        • It helps parents too
      • Have Fun, Go outside for everything you can, Games, combine "classroom" with hands on
        • 6 F's - Fun, Focus, Fingers, Faith, Family, Forest (or Branch)
      • Competition + Spreading the ownership of time.  Call on specific Trailmen.  Force raising hands.
        • They want to show off what they know.  Manage the ownership of time.
        • Ex. Repeating how the program works.  If someone says: "I already know that!" - quiz them and congratulate them on their brilliance and then ask more questions.
          • That means you should know it!  Hence - Training!
      • Challenge on more mature behavior.  Ex. bathroom and water breaks, helping others, "you owe that guy a handshake"
  • 15 min - Skim / 1000' Overview of the Woodlands Trail Leader Guide
  • 10 min - Youth protection Essentials.  Buddy System, two-deep Leadership, no one-on-one contact, privacy, other safety concerns.
    • Matthew 18
    • Training the parents at meetings
    • Even more important for Mountain Lion campouts
  • 10 min - How to handle disruptive boys and discipline
    • We want engaged, will accept present and neutral (not disrupting others), but will (try to) not accept negative behavior.
    • Be consistent and clear about what's acceptable
    • No phones
    • Separate the disruptions!  Dismiss really unruly behavior (if there's an adult).  Stop and get help from leaders if needed.
    • Hands off each other!
    • If you have the capacity, pull someone aside, calmly get to their level.
      • Ask a dad to take over the patrol for a meeting.
      • Distant enough to avoid hearing, stay within eye view
    • Talk to Luke & Jason
    • Tell parents when needed.  Generally that's most time you have to pull someone aside.
  • 60 min - Advancement overview for Woodlands Trail
    • Joining Awards, Branches, Forest Awards and Sylvan Stars
    • Worthy Life Award - Different for each program
    • Mountain Lions have some special perks
      • Fireguard and Woodsman Awards
      • Timberline
      • Campouts
    • Communicate with Parents
  • 20 min - A Tuesday Night
    • Typical Troop level agenda
      • Meet, Release to program time, Wisdom for the Wild, Release.
    • Planning for Tuesday
      • Program Year
      • Branch Planning Guides.  How to Plan a Tuesday / What Does a Tuesday Look Like?  How do you acquire outdoor skills you don't have?
      • Use Trail Life Connect Status
    • Backup Activity when the weather fails you.
  • 15 min - Review Resources
  • 60 min - How to use Trail Life Connect.  Replaces TroopTrack.
    • Track Progress
    • Plan your Tuesday
    • Collect info for parent emails
    • As of Aug 17, 2019 - it's not as easy as it was in TroopTrack for Woodlands Trail Trail Guides to plan meetings, but it's doable.
    • As of Aug 17, 2019 - there are no partial completions shown for Branches either in the Member Profile or in the Advancement section.
    • As of Aug 22, 2019 - there is no way to record step completion of work against Sylvan Stars prior to earning the Forest Award (spreadsheets).
    • Jason Davis will transfer existing partial progress from TroopTrack.
  • 10 min - How Do You Work with the Advancement Chair towards Court of Honor?
    • Jason is considering creating a single Troop shared, directory of Google Doc spreadsheets.  Thoughts?
  • Remaining time - Q & A
