Derby Car Design Basics and Ideas

The following provide a few ideas and how to's that we've found useful to help jump start your derby car designs.  By no means are you limited to these ideas!  As long as your car adheres to the rules, your project can be as unique and interesting as you like!

Equipment Notes

 

These items aren't required to build and race a derby car, but they are things we've found helpful so far. 

 

  • Coping Saw - safely making small cuts  
  • Scotch Pads - for smoothing axles and removing burs from wheel nails  
  • Sand paper - for cleaning up wood cuts.  Some have been known to sand the axles (the nails) so they are super smooth as well. 
  • Affordable personal kitchen scale.  This is the scale we'll use during weigh-in.  It's helpful to know your car will successfully pass the weigh-in before arriving at the event.
